Dialogue with the Dali Lama on "Educating the Heart" Members report - By Florence Javier
The
following report was submitted by Florence Javier as part of the Unions
policy to update the Executive and interested members about Conferences
attended by their peers.
The Dalai Lama visited Vancouver from Friday, September 8 to Sunday, September 10, 2006. He was hosted by the Dalai Lama Center for Peace and Education. During his visit, the Dalai Lama engaged in dialogues with leading educators, researchers and policy makers on the themes of cultivating compassion and educating the heart. In the dialogue entitled, “Educating the Heart” held September 8 at the Orpheum Theatre, the Dalai Lama emphasized how opening our hearts to others can be very beneficial both to self and to others- “ Love and compassion are beneficial for you and for others. Through kindness towards others, your mind and heart will open to peace.”-Dalai Lama. The Dalai Lama began by sharing his views on teaching the heart; not simply by teaching love but also compassion and empathy. He claimed that the basis of our existence is peace and peace can be only be attained by nurturing learning in these areas.
The dialogue served as an opportunity to join the Dalai Lama with education leaders in discussing issues of global responsibility and awakening the roots of empathy and compassion in learners. The intent of the dialogue was to promote the message that education systems should take into consideration not only the academic and cognitive sides of students but also their social, emotional and spiritual beings. The researchers, education leaders and policy makers present showed a great deal of passion towards the theme of educating the heart. Research was presented that analyzed the combined forces of what is already known- “to start by educating the children” and some phenomena yet unknown-“the what, the why and the how of educating the heart aspect”.
In the intention of exploring the foundation of educating the heart, the speakers shared their views on the theme of teaching compassion and empathy. The speakers were the following: Mary Gordon, OC, founder of the Roots of Empathy program which has shown tangible results in lowering levels of aggression and bullying in participating schools across Canada, Dr. Tim Shriver, CEO and Chairman of the Special Olympics, Dr. Bill Damon, Professor of Education, Director of the Stanford Center on Adolescence, author of The Youth Charter and internationally recognized author in the areas of moral and character education, Dr. Martin Brokenleg, whose work has been influential in reclaiming youth at risk in both Canada and the United States, Dr. Mark Greenberg, Director of the Prevention Research Center for the Promotion of Human Development at Penn State which aims to promote the well-being of children and youth and to reduce the prevalence of high risk behaviors and poor outcomes for children, families and communities. Dr. Clyde Hertzman, Director of the Human Early Learning Partnership and a member of the World Health Organization and Dr. Kim Schonert-Reichl, UBC researcher and author in the areas of moral development and social education.
The dialogue deepened the view that human intelligence lies not only in our minds but also in our heart and soul; as the children presented in some of the studies would say “love grows brains”, and through this sense of purpose initiated in them is the what, the why and the how of “educating the heart”.
I would like to thank CUPE and VCC for providing me an opportunity to attend the dialogue. It was inspiring for me to not only to see the passion of the Dalai Lama with respect to education, but to see the passion of educators with respect to the Dalai Lama’s perspectives on “educating the heart”.
