International conference on Public Policies
for Work in a Global Era - May 24, 2007

The following report was submitted by Lorna Brown as part of the Unions policy to update the Executive and interested members about Conferences attended by their peers.

This was a 3-day conference in Montreal. Delegates from Europe, Australia, North, South and Central Americas and Africa.

The conference was a forum for labor, management and politicians to gather and voice views on the direction of public policy and the effect policy has on the global economy as it relates to the public sector and the dialogues necessary to make intelligent choices for the future global marketplace.

The range of topics included the reduction of the role of collective bargaining, reduction of public costs and the individual's responsibilities, training responsibilities, limiting of market standards to reinforce market mechanisms and deregulation and privatization to increase competition, partnerships, and employee relations.

There is a need for Unions to be proactive on the Global stage and prepare for a new institutionalized order. Labor Standards are endangered by the deregulation of product markets ruled by Multinationals that impose sanctions and regulations in many countries at the same time.
