Members of CUPE Local 4627, people we work with, and complete strangers often approach us with statements regarding CUPE, the union movement and our specific local that surprise us. They are often followed by "is that true?". Most of the time it is at least partially incorrect information that has made it's way back to someone who may be under the impression that they or a co-worker are affected.

This MYTHBUSTERS page will be ever expanding as the quirks and queries come in with a verdict of either BUSTED, CONFIRMED or PLAUSIBLE (maybe) - so perhaps check in when you hear something out of the ordinary. Feel free to contact us with a potential myth you've heard making the rounds.

PLAUSIBLE? CONFIRMED? BUSTED?

Myth: CUPE Local 4627 Executives, JE reps and Shop Stewards are paid for their services.
1.
BUSTED >>
CUPE Local 4627 Executives, JE reps and Shop Stewards or any members of the union are NOT - and have NEVER been - paid for their services. All the work done by these people is on a volunteer basis. On occassion, to attend to specific Union business that occurs, Union book-off time is approved by the Executive. If this is the circumstance the member continues to receive their pay through VCC's payroll - but the Union pays back the college for the equivalent amount of time used for union business. Most often - when meetings or business falls outside of the members working hours they are not compensated at all.

Myth: I get a day off for moving, and one for my birthday, and three for my wedding.
2. BUSTED >> There are no provisions in the CUPE 4627 collective agreement for a moving day or your birthday or wedding leave. If you want a day off for such events it is best to utilize your vacation, overtime, or gratuity time.

Myth: CUPE 4627 members have access to career development monies of $1,500.
3. CONFIRMED >> CUPE 4627 members have access to career development monies of $1,500 - see the union's webpage on Career Development to see all the guidelines for access these CD funds.

Myth: I will have to take my vacation during the Olympics.
4. BUSTED >> No one is required to take their vacation during the Olympics--you may choose to, but it is not required. The Union and the College are currently in discussions regarding Feb 12-28, 2010. Jointly we are exploring minimum staff levels required, utilization of Career Development, vacation, telework, and flextime. We hope to have more information ready for the May 20 General Meeting. To date, the only certainty is that the Downtown campus will be closed during the Olympics--and death and taxes.

Myth: The Union Executive goes out to dinner after every executive meeting
5. CONFIRMED >> Your current Union Executive are a bunch of foodies. After a Union Executive meeting we usually head to a restaurant share some good food and a few laughs. No union money is spent to support our habits, be they alcoholic or gastronomic. We've enjoyed quite a few restaurants in the Lower Mainland so contact a Union Executive for the latest Union news or a restaurant recommendation. Recent culinary adventures: Bandidas Taqueria ; Green Lettuce ; Rocky Mountain Flatbread ; Chambar : Tamarind Hill ; Go Thai.

Myth: If I have a grievance with the College I have to be involved in all discussions and meetings to deal with the grievance.
6. BUSTED >> Grievances are filed on the behalf of a member by a Shop Steward and are owned by the Union as the Bargaining Agent of the membership. Union representatives can and will meet on your behalf to negotiate a settlement to the grievance.

Myth: If I take a day off for Family Illness I will lose the opportunity to gain a Gratuity Day for the quarter and lose sick time from my sick bank.
7. BUSTED >> When a CUPE member takes 1-5 Family Illness days you can still earn a Gratuity day for the quarter provided you have not taken any other sick time off in that fiscal quarter. Family Illness is deducted from your sick hours balance only.
