Have you thought about trying yoga at VCC? See what others think of this 'wellness at work'.
We are hoping to find a way to increase the "Yoga Presence" at VCC. I have been teaching here for over 5 years and as you will read below there are many employees who are and continue to benefit from this workplace incentive. If there is a way to spread the news so that ALL employees, childcare parents and possibly students could participate it would make the ongoing success of this program more viable. Yoga is the number 1 prescribed activity recommended by mainstream medicine to cope with and manage stress. Our classes are geared for the workplace and are open to all levels and abilities. Please contact me or Heather for further info. We are asking for some help in ways in which this program could return to partial subsidy and increased awareness within the campus. I teach at other corporations and the union subsidizes classes as they reflect wellness initiative and support career/personal development.
The following are testimonials from your colleagues: please take a moment to read
I for sure feel less stressed and really refreshed after the Yoga class. My head is clear especially after all the deep breathing. And the breathing helps to force toxins out of our system so that you have less muscle fatigue and pain after your workout. I also find that I am more flexible when I practice Yoga. I hope this progam will continue forever! Thanks Susan

It is not easy for me to put into words how much the yoga class at VCC has helped me. The opportunity for exercise has strengthened my muscles and toned my body. As a result, I feel healthier. The time spent at yoga class has helped me to stay calm and relieved stress. Yoga is an activity that benefits both the body and the mind. I hope yoga will continue to be offered at VCC.

"The availability of yoga, here at VCC, is something I appreciate very much. In particular, the Wednesday class that takes place after work, is most suited to my schedule. Heather's class hits all the right notes for me; they provide the necessary physical challenges, insights into mindful thinking as well as providing a supportive setting for this practice.
Heather is very motivated as an instructor. She is most knowledgeable about her subject and when it comes to yoga, she combines familiar poses with unexpected physical moves. Given the lack of preventative health programs for VCC employees, I hope her class will continue to be a presence, here at the College."

I think yoga at the workplace is terrific. It's a good break for both mind and body. It doesn't require you to travel anywhere-- it's right at the workplace, so you save time and really you have no excuse for not attending! It also makes you appreciate your workplace more, and see it and your colleagues in a different light..
I'd (and I do!) recommend it to anyone, Wilma
For me, the only way I would ever go back to Yoga in the workplace is if it were offered at the Downtown Campus during the lunch hour (12-1) at least once but preferably twice a week. I don't know how much you would charge for this but I know it would likely be more than what I currently pay at my local community centre for evening and weekend classes. Nevertheless, I would still pay more if we even had Yoga at all Downtown. Why? C-O-N-V-E-N-I-E-N-C-E.
I have tried to recruit people for Yoga Downtown before and talked to the VCC Administration about it. On both fronts it seems that a lack of agreeable space was the issue that prevented it being offered. Has anything changed? If so, I would love to know and sign up. Offering Yoga Downtown shouldn't be as difficult as people seem to be making it.

Why I like Yoga: I like it because it helps work out "kinks" in the neck and back after work. Also, yoga helps provide a sense of calm after a hectic day. Yoga loosens up my joints and helps me to be more mobile. Most of all, yoga leaves me with an uplifted feeling afterwards.

I appreciate the opportunity to do yoga at my work site to assist me in the release of stressful tension, that an all round body focused exercise, like yoga does. The chance to be able to fit this into a very busy and long week here at work is amazing, and I sincerely hope that VCC will continue with this effort to assist our employees to live a balanced and happy life, by reducing the stress of maintaining a regular exercise regime elsewhere.

I've been taking yoga at VCC for over five years now and can certainly attest to its benefits. I spend most of my days at the computer and carry a lot of tension in my neck and shoulders. Our lunch hour yoga classes help get me moving and keep me limber. Our yoga practice also gives me the opportunity to check in with my body and acknowledge any aches, pains and tensions before they get problematic.
One of the things I have learned to appreciate the most is the way we focus on the breath in our practice. It's very calming and restorative as well as a very powerful tool. I often use some of the breathing techniques to handle stressful situations and calm myself when I'm anxious. A couple of years ago, I was even able to undergo surgery with a local anesthetic while I controlled my breath to stay relaxed and calm. My recovery time was drastically reduced because I did not suffer the side effects of the anesthesia.
I'd love to see yoga continue and expand at VCC so that more employees can benefit.
Michelle
(Here's why I love yoga in the workplace—hope it helps!)
If it wasn't for yoga in the workplace, I probably wouldn't be doing yoga at all. The convenience of having yoga right where I work helps me to "show up" -- in more ways than one! Knowing that there is one hour reserved for me to focus on clearing my mind while moving my body and focusing on my breath has brought a kind of calm to my work life that wasn't there before. Sometimes I find myself feeling uptight or rushed, and I remind myself that it will all be worked out during my yoga practice with Susan. And then I'm ready to give back once again. Thank you Susan!
