A Federal Election will be held on Monday, October 21, 2019. Under the Canada Elections Act, the polls in British Columbia will be open from 7:00 am to 7:00 pm. The Act also stipulates that employers must provide employees with three (3) consecutive hours free of work duties to vote.

Section 132 of the Act “Time to Employees for Voting”, reads as follows:

132.(1) Every employee who is an elector is entitled, during voting hours on polling day, to have three consecutive hours for the purpose of casting his or her vote and, if his or her hours of work do not allow for those three consecutive hours, his or her employer shall allow the time for voting that is necessary to provide those three consecutive hours.

No deduction in pay may result from the time off. Due to varying work hours throughout the College, please consult with your supervisor regarding your work hours on election day. Any issues with the interpretation of what exactly 3 consecutive hours free of work duties is discuss with a shop steward. Here is a list of shop stewards to contact.
